Chellomedia’s Spanish kids channel Canal Panda has seen its monthly viewer ratings increase to 0.6% from 0.3% thanks to the launch of multiscreen apps, according to the broadcaster.Chellomedia introduced Canal Panda streaming and VOD apps for iPhones and iPads in April using technology from Applicaster. The app costs €1.59 per month and includes 15 minutes of free access for the first six months.“We are proud of being able to present Canal Panda to the Spanish audience with these innovative and pioneering services for our young viewers and their parents,” said Eduardo Zulueta, CEO Chello Multicanal. “We have seen that the use of mobile devices is helping our audience to know us deeply and encourages their coming to the big screen to watch us more often.” read more
Verizon has competed its US$4.5 billion acquisition of Yahoo’s core business and has combined it with AOL to create a new subsidiary called Oath.As a home to more than 50 media and technology brands, Oath’s portfolio includes HuffPost, Yahoo Sports, AOL.com, Makers, Tumblr, Build Studios and Yahoo Finance.AOL CEO Tim Armstrong becomes CEO of the new subsidiary, having lead the integration planning teams since the Yahoo takeover was announced in July 2016. Meanwhile, Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer, has resigned and exits the business.“The close of this transaction represents a critical step in growing the global scale needed for our digital media company,” said Verizon president of Media and Telematics, Marni Walden.“The combined set of assets across Verizon and Oath, from VR to AI, 5G to IoT, from content partnerships to originals, will create exciting new ways to captivate audiences across the globe.”Armstrong said: “We’re building the future of brands using powerful technology, trusted content and differentiated data.“Now that the deal is closed, we are excited to set our focus on being the best company for consumer media, and the best partner to our advertising, content and publisher partners.”Oath began operations yesterday and is part of Verizon’s Media and Telematics organisation. Vive Studios is due premiere what it claims is “the world’s first feature-length cinematic VR experience” at the Raindance Film Festival in London in October.7 Miracles was created in partnership with Panogramma and Film Production Consultants and recreates the seven miracles performed by Jesus Christ, as told in the Gospel of John, in virtual reality.“We are thrilled to push the boundaries of story-telling in VR with 7 Miracles,” said Joel Breton, general manager of Vive Studios.“Our amazing film production team has worked tirelessly to pioneer the technology for cinematic virtual reality and to bring the viewers back in time to experience the miracles of Jesus for themselves.”Executive Producer Enzo Sisti said: “Working on this project has been a wonderful experience for me and my team. This new cinematic VR technology has given my team and me a chance to create and tell more personal and intimate stories.”The title has been nominated in Raindance’s Grand Jury Prize: Best Immersive Story category and is due for release on all major VR headsets later this year.
