NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL is launching a social justice platform, with an emphasis on education, economic development and community and police relations. The platform is called Inspire Change and includes the funding of grass-roots organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Operation HOPE. It also will establish a digital learning curriculum for African-American history in 175 underserved high schools.FILE – In this May 19, 2015, file photo, Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, speaks at the NFL’s spring meetings in San Francisco. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu, File)The league announced the initiative Friday in connection with its 32 teams and the Players Coalition, a group of players that works for social justice.Inspire Change is the latest step for the league and the players after they established a working relationship in October 2017 following player demonstrations for social justice during the national anthem — a topic that drew attention from the White House.“This launch involves new grants, new African-American history education programs in schools, grants with organizations we have not worked with before and who are doing the work on the ground, and PSAs on broadcasts beginning with this weekend’s playoff games,” says Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president of social responsibility.“You have to really take the time to understand the topic, you can’t just dive in. We really took the time to meet with and talk to advocates and community leaders and to decide the most important aspects to focus on under the broad social justice umbrella.”The league’s financial commitment in 2018 was $8.5 million, plus an additional $2 million for NFL Foundation grants for clubs, former players and active players. For the 2019 fiscal year, that will increase to $12 million overall. But those figures don’t include the funds raised collaboratively by clubs and players as part of the social justice matching funds program each club has established.Former player and players association president Troy Vincent, now the league’s pro football operations chief, emphasizes how much work has been done and continues to be done by the players. This week, he was told by Players Coalition co-founder Anquan Boldin that the NFL is still “on point” with its initiatives.Vincent, who grew up outside Philadelphia, didn’t understand the complexities of the incarceration rate and the bail system. He notes how opening of communication between the league office and teams and communities has helped steer the social justice movement.“What we learned is that every community knew the grassroots organizations in their respective neighborhoods that were doing the work, the daily hands-on work,” Vincent said. “Working with the larger organizations gave us a national view.”Two of those larger groups, BBBSA and Operation HOPE, will receive grants. Operation HOPE will use the funds to support its nationwide work within underserved communities to equip young people and adults with financial tools and education. For Big Brothers Big Sisters, it’s all about mentoring, and many players already serve in such a capacity.“We are the ultimate grassroots organization,” says Pam Iorio, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which has 257 agencies throughout the 50 states and has existed for 115 years. “We’re all about strengthening communities one relationship at a time.”“We serve children from age 6 until young adulthood, and most of them come from very challenged backgrounds, whether family or economically challenged or neighborhood challenged.”Adds Isaacson: “If we can come in and help them through these initiatives, that is social justice.”Vincent mentions the work done by two of last year’s grantees, the United Negro College Fund and Dream Corps. The college fund created a program aimed to alleviate the impact of mass incarceration by stressing higher education. Dream Corps performed voter registration drives.“It all falls into social justice issues,” Vincent said. “They’re all broad and deep and unique to each community, but everyone wants fairness, due process and equal justice.”

Kobe’s got the 81, but what about that 48 and 16 in Game 4 against the Kings in 2001? Sure, Jordan gave the Knicks the double nickel in 1995, but have you watched the highlights on that 51-point game as a 38-year-old lately? Good golly. On and on down the line — Magic’s 42-15-7 when he was forced to play center as a rookie, Hakeem’s prolonged annihilation of David Robinson’s Spurs in 1995 playoffs — the impactful moments of a star player’s career are preserved in the box score fossil record. That’s how things go for the NBA’s most venerated stars. Just not for Manu Ginobili, who will turn 40 this July and finds his San Antonio Spurs down 3-0 to the Golden State Warriors.Ginobili, who could potentially play his last game in tonight’s Game 4, is unlike any other star of his caliber in that his game logs never quite captured his effect on the court. Ginobili’s career was borne out in moments. And pulling a moment out of a Play Index can be difficult.Mostly, this came down to playing time. Ginobili has averaged just 25.8 minutes per game for his career and had just two seasons in which he played more than 30 per game, leaving him without the per-game numbers of his peers. But dig into his per-minute stats, and you begin to see his true effect in the game.By Win Shares per 48 minutes since 1960, Ginobili career number is 28th, just behind Dirk Nowitzki. If we refine that to just the first 10 years of a player’s career — since dinosaurs like Manu and Dirk get docked points for playing a bunch of years in their decline phase — Ginobili rises to 16th, tucked between Larry Bird and Jerry West. Minute for minute, Ginobili out-produced contemporaries such as Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett, though he was never asked to carry a team the way they were, either. It’s franchise-player talent stuffed into a super-sub role, and it makes it difficult to find a historical comparison for Ginobili. His comps via Basketball Reference’s similarity score, for instance, contain a puzzling mix of Terry Porter, Jeff Hornacek and Allen Iverson — three profoundly unsimilar players. (My notion for Manu’s aesthetic comparison was always a stubbier Tracy McGrady, but Ginobili’s catch-all style makes him comparable to any tallish All-NBA level guard from the 3-point era.)Yet even among those allegedly similar players, Ginobili’s career stands apart from the others, again, owing to his minutes. We can quantify the number of “big game” performances using John Hollinger’s Game Score, a measure of how well a player played in a given contest. A 20-game score is something like Ginobili’s 27-point, five-assist, three-steal performance in Game 3 of the 2010 Western Conference semis; 30-game score is more like a 40-point, nine-assist, six-rebound performance from 2005. Ginobili’s short minutes meant that while he was producing at a Larry Bird level possession by possession, he had fewer big game lines than Hersey Hawkins. Manu does have his share of signature games, such as a career-high 48-pointer against the upstart Suns in 2005. But his legacy runs deeper than single games. Ginobili made the eurostep’s side-to-side weave on the way to the rim as central to the modern game as the crossover or step-back. He was the posterboy for the rise of flopping, but he was also one of the first guards to combine a high free-throw rate with a high volume of 3s. By our homebrewed Morey Index, which finds the players who lean most heavily on three pointers and free throws,1Using the geometric mean of free-throw rate and 3-point attempt rate. Ginobili’s 2004-05 ranks 56th of all player seasons since 1980, with multiple other appearances in the top 100. He punctuated that season with a standout Game 2 of the 2005 Finals — back when Ginobili had hair and Al Michaels called basketball games — with 27 points on just eight field goal attempts, going 4 for 5 from 3 and 11 for 13 from the line. But not every piece of a player’s game can be quantified, and with Ginobili it feels as if more than most goes unaccounted for — whether it’s the no-look passes that were as much a danger to the cotton candy vendors as they were to defenders or the little funk he put on something as simple as an entry pass. Ginobili has always been reckless — he smashed the bat, and fouled Dirk and played with an abandon that had Gregg Popovich with one breath holding him up as an exemplar of competition, and with the next reminding him, “Manu: It’s f—ing September. Never do that again in September,” as quoted by ESPN.com. Every one of his minutes was a delight because you never knew what would happen next and, you suspected, neither did he.A lot of things can happen between now and the end of the Western Conference finals. The San Antonio Spurs may push the series to a gentleman’s sweep. They may even force the Golden State Warriors to six or seven games, or even take the series. But regardless of the outcome, the time we have left with the inimitable Manu Ginobili is running short. He has spent a career packing memorable moments into short minutes; we can hope he’s got one or two more on his way out. read more

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri admits they need to find a solution to their problems up front as soon as possible ahead of Saturday’s game against NewcastleThe Blues’ problems up front have become evident over the last month with Sarri even resorting to moving winger Eden Hazard into a false nine role to boost their offence.Despite Hazard’s strong performances, however, Chelsea have still struggled up front and were unable to capitalise on their opportunities in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Tottenham on Tuesday.Reports are now suggesting that Sarri is looking to bring in his former Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain for some badly needed firepower.“We need to score,” said Sarri on the club website.“We need to solve this problem. In the last match we played very well, with continuity and with a very good offensive and defensive phase, and with a great performance from a physical point of view – the best of the season – but we didn’t score.Sacchi explains Sarri, Conte, and Ancelotti Manuel R. I don’t know about tomorrow because he played 2 matches in three days for the first time this season, as Callum did.“Callum recovered very well from the first match, yesterday he was a little bit tired but I think that’s normal for the first time in the season when you play two matches in three days. Whichever receives the most votes — provided its over 50 percent — will earn rights to negotiate with the city over plans for the stadium site. The lawsuit claimed Friends of SDSU tricked San Diegans into signing a petition to get the initiative on the ballot by making it appear that the university had sanctioned the proposal. The data in the graphic speaks for itself. That is, every single issue we measured last year shrunk this year. Not a single title remained flat or grew. Even the powerhouse Vogue lost five ounces over the previous year and its spine shrunk two millimeters. To put that into better context, PeopleStyle only weighs nine ounces total. We wish there was a positive spin here, but there’s really not, at least not in print—print being the keyword. We did talk to a number of publishers and they indicated that the magazine is just one channel for the brands and their partners are leveraging for the perennial fall fashion season. So what can’t be reflected here is what types of integrated buys were built around these issues, with video programming, events and other products. So while this data is bleak, it’s not necessarily a reflection of the total state of magazine media. But it still shouldn’t be discounted.MethodologyEach magazine was weighed on two scales to confirm accuracy. Weights were rounded to the nearest ounce. Additionally, each spine was measured in the middle of the book and rounded to the nearest millimeter. Because trim sizes and paper stock are not uniform, we combined weight and spine thickness measurements to create an overall score to even the playing field. This story originally appeared in Folio:‘s sister publication, min. Once again this year we decided to weigh the September issues. Without access to ad page data, book size becomes an increasingly more important indicator than in years past. And this year, the indicator is not good. September was always the one time when these publications truly believed big is beautiful, but they are starting to become as petite as those who grace their covers. To conduct this research we went out and procured the magazines the old fashioned way—on the newsstand. Here’s the rather disturbing thing: they weren’t all that easy to find. We visited a few different newsstands, asked the clerks about them, and were met with a blank stares. It wasn’t until we visited a major book retailer were we able to purchase all nine titles. Perhaps that alone is a telling enough indicator that the September issues don’t carry the weight they once did. Nevertheless, we still walked out of the store with nine magazines that weighed in at nearly 15 pounds (plus we got a really cool commemorative tote for buying Vogue). Still, that’s a loss of nearly five cumulative pounds versus last year. Nobody will congratulate these titles for their dramatic weight losses. read more

The shutdown of Live.ly was first reported by TechCrunch.“Live-streaming from Live.ly is moving to Musical.ly — our goal is to make it easy to enjoy your favorite short videos and your favorite live content, all in one place,” said a company rep. According to mobile-analytics firm Sensor Tower, Live.ly had more than 26 million installs to date, with the U.S. accounting for about 70% of installs. In the first quarter of 2018, downloads of the app were down about 41% year-over-year from Q1 2017 — indicating a big loss of momentum. The move comes after Musical.ly was acquired by Chinese tech giant Bytedance last year in a deal reportedly worth up to $1 billion. In its first few months, Live.ly had initially attracted a number of top creators to the platform, some of whom said they were making tens of thousands of dollars per month via digital “gifts” purchased by their fans.Under Bytedance’s ownership, Musical.ly has operated as an independent platform headed by co-founders Louis Yang and Alex Zhu, while collaborating with its parent. Musical.ly has announced the creation of a $50 million in a fund to support its users (or “Musers” in the company’s lingo) with scholarship programs and co-development deals with users and media partners. New Delhi: The amount of plastic garbage increases as the population grows, and disposable plastic products, like wet wipes, coffee cups, drinks bottles, sweet wrappers and other packets, accumulate over time. In India, we generate around 15,000tonnes of plastic waste per day and is growing every day. As per a study conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in few major cities of the country, it has been observed that around 4,059 tons of waste is generated on per day basis. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfBig players of consumer-goods such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble pledged to use more recycled plastics for their products in order to initiate change for sustainable future. As the concern over plastic waste increases around the world, scientists, entrepreneurs and engineers have begun to come up with solutions that could help our planet to survive for the coming generations. Slow but effective development can be seen as some are coming up with methods for recycling plastics, while on the other hand few are developing products that are safe and biodegradable in niche segments. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveMs. Rishu Gandhi, Founder, Mother Sparsh says “In Consumer goods category wet wipes are 3rd largest contributor of plastic based pollution in the world, it takes centuries for these 80% polyester-based wipes to degrade. To tackle the plastic pollution, we as brands need to go organic like what we did with our offerings which started with natural and eco friendly products line of wipes in the market.” In India, with over 1.5 million births every month we are doubling the consumption of wet wipes every month with the increasing population. To add to the concern, Waste management is itself a problem in India hence, plastic waste management is very poor. These plastic wastes are either burned releasing toxic gases, buried to degraded over centuries or thrown in our oceans to make them more polluted and harmful for oceans ecology. According to Social Activist Mr. Vneet P Yadav, “Plastic is a concern for environment specially for humans if we burn it, it never gets burnt completely and release harmful gases like styrene which affects eye & mucous membranes, central nervous system. Dioxin which is a carcinogen and hormone disruptor also is emitted in the air which gets settled on our crops and water thus into our food. Dioxin also gets accumulated on body fat and passed on to babies of expectant mothers. Hence, a useful invention has been abused so much that it has become a concern for the planet.” To add to that, scientists have found that micro plastics which can not be seen are getting mixed in our air and water. Given the state of Indian infrastructure, we have successfully added micro plastics as a pollutant in the long list of chemicals and particulate matter. A report from UK suggested that we inhale around 130 tiny plastic particles in a day, so the situation is much more alarming if we look at the Indian scenario where air quality refuses to leave severely polluted category. “We are breathing polluted air induced with harmful chemicals and gases. We as human beings are completely oblivious of the fact that we inhale plastic substances every day, w hich makes way to our lungs – causing us serious health issues. We need to understand that outdoor air pollution is not only endangering our lives but even indoor air pollution is contributing to this menace.” Said Mr. Rohit Bansal, AQI Expert & Founder, aqi.in. Plastic has proven to be a resilient opposition in terms of pollution of air, water and land. Whether it is visible or invisible the plastic waste is here to stay and we as humans are not just using plastics but are carrying plastic in our bodies which is an alarming sign. Hence, Government has to work more aggressively towards this problem before it becomes hard to contain. read more
