The competition included about 180 submissions from 41 business schools from Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong.Darryl Moyers and Tyler Stark took first place in the Management Information Services event. Charlene Viscek and Nicole Hagel finished third in the Human Resources Event.Competitors analyzed and presented a business case offering a solution to a posed problem. For the students, it was evidence that what they learned at Brock has real world applications, Stark said.It was also evidence that a Brock business education ranks among the top in the country, Viscek said.“It shows that even though Brock is still small, we can do great things.”The Faculty of Business also sent a 24-member team to the MBA Games in Toronto recently. The Business Simulation team of Danielle Herrnstein, Daniel Gruda and Najlaa Rauff placed first in its event.“This win represents the first time Brock has won an event at the MBA Games and served as a fabulous conclusion to a very rewarding weekend for all team participants,” said Shari Sekel, director of graduate programs for the Faculty of Business.

Two first-half goals were all it took for the Hoosiers to give OSU its third consecutive loss. The Buckeyes ended the match with a season high 19 fouls and were outshot 33-10. Buckeye redshirt-junior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov fell to 2-4-1 as a starter and tallied 10 saves, matching his season high.Ivanov said despite the weather conditions, he was pleased with the way the team played.“With the unforgiving conditions, we did all right, but obviously, it was unfortunate end result,” he said. “I’m always thinking, ‘If I can prevent them from scoring, we’ll always have a chance,’ and as a goalkeeper I can’t change the game by scoring, so hopefully next time I can get 12 saves and we can get a better result.”OSU’s struggles with finishing on scoring plays continued as it was unable to score off of 10 shots, five of which were on target. The team has recorded just one goal in the last five games on 54 attempts.Buckeye coach John Bluem said that he is impressed by how well the team is handling the unlucky slump of not netting a goal.“I sound like a broken record, but we had a nice stretch in the first half, but we failed to come up with a goal again,” Bluem said. “And it seems like we really should have had one.”Bluem said that in practice, the team will watch film and hopefully be able to get a goal in the team’s next outing.“We’re going to look at video again and continue to try and improve in areas where we can get better,” he said. “I think the guys are responding well to this difficult stretch, but it would obviously help if we could get a win and build our confidence.”Preseason No. 1 and 2012 NCAA champions, Indiana (4-4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) opened the match quickly taking five shots and a corner kick in the first six minutes, but multiple saves by Ivanov kept it scoreless for the first 30 minutes. The Hoosiers continued their assault in the first half firing 25 shots and connected on two of them, ending the half with a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes were outshot 25-4 and Ivanov recorded seven saves. Both teams created multiple scoring opportunities in the second half, but neither was able to connect. The Buckeyes’ best chance at a goal came in the 57th minute when senior captain and defender Sage Gardner blasted a shot from nearly 10 yards outside the box. Gardner almost squeaked it into the upper right corner of the net, but Hoosier redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Michael Soderlund was able to block it just before going in. Eleven minutes later, sophomore Buckeye midfielder Zach Mason attempted a long-distance shot of his own, which almost mirrored Gardner’s shot exactly.Gardner said afterwards he was just trying to place the ball inside the box to a teammate on the play, and he believes the team will eventually find a way to score after continuously working on it in practice.“I think ultimately, it’s the mentality, so we just got to instill confidence in each other,” he said. “We know we can create opportunities to score against these teams, now it’s just if we can capitalize on them.”OSU is scheduled to return to Columbus play Wednesday to face off against No. 18 Louisville. read more
At the LANXESS Arena in Koln tomorrow we will see a Spanish final, as Ciudad Real cruised to what seems a rather easy victory against Barcelona. The Talant Dushebayev’s team will be tomorrow seeking their 4th Champions League title, as HSV will have to be happy with their Bundesliga champion success for this season. We had an interesting and very tough played first half, with the goalkeepers making very good saves, and after the 10 minutes the score was equal 4-4 after HSV had early leads, and at the 11th minute for the first time in this game Ciudad Real took the lead after Kiril Lazarov scored his 3rd goal, for 5-4 for Ciudad Real. HSV called a timeout in the 18th minute, after Ciudad took a 7-5 lead, two-goal lead for the first time. HSV managed to consolidate themselves a little, but Ciudad however showed why they’re were dominating Spain for the past 3-4 years, pressed even more, and at half-time went with the 2-goal advantage, 12-10, Kiril Lazarov leading the team with 4 goals.Early in the 2nd half, Ciudad Real took its biggest lead so far, through Rodriguez for 17-12 in the 35th minute. Ciudad Real even managed to get a 6 goal lead, but HSV showed why they are the German champions this year, and at the 45th minute, the Ciudad lead was down to 3 goals, at 22-19. Five minutes later, at the 50th minute, Ciudad calls for a timeout, after HSV got the lead down to 2 goals only. The timeout tactics work out, and Ciudad is back to a formidable lead, taking a 24-20 advantage with 8 minutes to go until the end of the game, and now it’s Martin Schwalb’s turn for a timeout. Lackovic scores a goal in the 55th minute to cut Ciudad’s lead down to 24-21, with only 5 minutes and 29 seconds to go. That’s the most we saw from HSV. Ciudad scored three times in a row, and had 27-21 with 3 minutes to go, and the winner is sealed. The final score is 28-23 for Ciudad. The topscorers of this game were Entrerrios and Abalo with 6, while Lazarov scored 5, and also magnificent defences were made by Hombrados. Hans Lindbergh and Stefan Schroder were the HSV leading topscorers both with 5 goals. ← Previous Story Barcelona to the final! MORE THAN 100 social worker posts are yet to be filled, according to the Head of Child and Family Agency, Gordon Jeyes.Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Jeyes said they were in the process of filling the posts, but said: “It takes up to 12 weeks to fill a social worker vacancy, that’s simply too long.”He said that each person has to go through Garda vetting which takes time and they also have to be professionally registered. “We need to speed it up” he said, adding that they also need to lobby to streamline the service.ApplicantsJeyes added that it “is not a question of people” stating that people are coming forward to fill the vacancies.Speaking about filling the staffing gaps with a graduate placement scheme, he said he agreed with the proposal, saying it is a chance for students to “rehearse their role” and ensure they become a “solid backbone” of the service.Read: New child protection agency to be officially launched today>Read: Alcohol abuse among over 50s has increased since the financial crisis> read more
NEW YORK’S ALLEGED “cannibal cop” burst into tears at the end of a trial Thursday as his lawyer said he was guilty of no more than “ugly thoughts” and prosecutors dubbed him a dangerous sadist. The case, which has riveted the Big Apple tabloid media and raised questions about freedom of speech, was left for the Manhattan federal court jury to decide.Gilberto Valle, 28, is accused of conspiracy to kidnap young women, including his wife, whom he would then torture, kill and eat.Although no women were actually harmed, the man dubbed the “Cannibal Cop” in US media, discussed the gruesome plans with other men in exchanges on websites dedicated to extreme sexual fetishes.Valle could face a sentence of life in prison if convicted. He is also charged with the lesser crime of illegally accessing the police database. In an impassioned final statement, his lawyer Julia Gatto said Valle had a disturbing, but far from unique sexual fantasy about cannibalising women. There was only proof of “ugly thoughts (and) we don’t convict human beings just because of ugly thoughts,” she said.“They want you to convict, not because there’s proof, but because you won’t like the way his mind works,” Gatto added. “Gilberto Valle is accused of a crime he didn’t commit.”The accused man sobbed, as he frequently has during his trial, when Gatto told the jury that her client had already lost his reputation, his career, his marriage and young child over the case. But prosecutors matched the legal fireworks with statements painting Valle as a ticking bomb who had to be stopped before he had a chance to put his online discussions — and internet searches on kidnapping and killing techniques — into action.“Officer Valle crossed the line. He left the world of fantasy. He entered the world of reality and, thankfully, he was stopped before he could act,” Assistant US Attorney Hadassa Waxman said.“He was serious,” she said. “He was not just fantasising and he would have carried out the plans if he thought he could get away with it, if he had not been stopped.”Gatto described Valle as a “nice, non-violent man,” despite his addiction to pornography involving corpses and torture scenes. She warmly hugged her client after finishing her closing arguments. But in the government rebuttal — when prosecutors get the last word before jury deliberations — US Attorney Randall Jackson said Valle was a “sadistic person.”“The evidence in this case is overwhelming,” he told the jury, almost shouting at times. “He has no right at this point to ask you to bail him out.”Jackson lashed out at the defense attorneys’ suggestions that the right to free speech enshrined in the First Amendment of the US Constitution was at stake in the trial.“They’ve said this repeatedly, that the government’s the thought police. This has nothing to do with the First Amendment,” Jackson said. “Mr Valle is not an author.”Referring to the well-known concept of free speech not including the malicious shouting of “fire” in a crowded theater, Jackson said: “The limits of free speech are what will actually place real people in harm.”Jackson said Valle’s claim to have been participating in harmless fantasies about abducting and eating women was no more valid than someone claiming they could take part in a pretend bank robbery or airplane hijacking.“The word ‘fantasy’ has been completely misused and corrupted here,” he said. “You think of the stories you told your children, fairies, pixie dust. Gilberto Valle’s fantasies are about seeing women executed.”Gatto said the authorities failed to understand the extreme fetish subculture and were confusing fiction with fact.To back up her argument, she showed the jury an email written by her client early last year: “I just have a world in my mind, and in that world, I’m kidnapping women and selling them,” he wrote.Gatto said that email “explains the entire case.”“There really was a world in his mind,” she added, calling on the jury “to protect all our rights.”- © AFP, 2013Read: NYPD officer arrested over plot to kidnap and eat women read more
The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington received $50,000 in grant funding that should help bolster its volunteer program.Volunteers are an important part of the Free Clinic’s services, said Ann Wheelock, executive director of the clinic. The Free Clinic specializes in free, quality health care to children and adults who are otherwise unable to obtain such services, according to a Free Clinic press release.Wheelock said the Free Clinic has seen its staff working in the volunteer recruitment area shrink from two full-time staff to one person working part time. The grant should help increase the hours of that part-time employee. The Free Clinic utilizes clinical specialists, who are generally college-aged people interested in going into some type of medical school, Wheelock said. Those specialists can help assist doctors by helping them find lab tests or with other duties.“We have not been able to go out and recruit those volunteers,” Wheelock said. “This will hopefully give us room to rebuild that program back up.”The Free Clinic will also look into using some of the funds to hire a community health worker who can focus on helping patients get their hypertension or diabetes under control, which are two problems Wheelock said the Free Clinic frequently encounters. read more

#speechfromthethroneBahamas Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, Today’s opening of Parliament follows upon my government’s election to office fourteen days ago in a most historic election victory. My Government is grateful to Almighty God for his guidance, which enabled a peaceful political transition by free people who have embraced Parliamentary democracy for well-nigh 288 years. With a voter turnout of 88% and the participation of 175 candidates representing five (5) political parties in the General Election of 2017 bears eloquent testimony to the spirit of participatory democracy. This it is a reason for exultation and pride, particularly when we are surrounded by examples of many nations with historically low voter turnout. It is therefore suitable that while thanking Almighty God we also commend the Bahamian people for their spirited and full participation in an electoral process that turned out, despite early confusion, to be violence free, and that gave birth to a new era. Our Bahamas is world renowned for the civility that surrounds our national elections, and once again we can take collective pride in reinforcing our reputation for upholding our democratic traditions. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, On 10 May 2017, the Bahamian people spoke loudly, clearly and resolutely in the ballot boxes, and gave the Free National Movement, an overwhelming vote of confidence to restore this nation to the core values of Self Discipline, Industry, Loyalty, Unity, good governance and an abiding respect for Christian values and the Rule of Law. Consequently, my Government is fully committed to harnessing the energy the Bahamian people and is determined to pursue policies that promote harmony and not division. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, The mandate given to my Government on 10 May 2017 is a mandate for change. This is a time for the accelerated development of all of our people in all spheres of national life. This is a time for the people. This is indeed the peoples’ time. My Government has therefore pledged to listen to the voice, aspirations, dreams, hopes and desires of our people. Despite the parallels with the victory of 1992, my Government is well aware that the world has changed significantly. Thus the policies of my Government will not be drawn from the experiences of the past, but must be formed in the sunlight of contemporary realities. This reality is reflected in the very large number of new faces in our Parliament which tells me that there is a growing number of young people with a strong desire for public service. My government will be well served by this large contingent of first time members in the halls of Parliament. They will be assisted by a number of experienced Members of Parliament in both the people’s Senate and House of Assembly, on whom we rely to provide the thread of continuity that is so valuable in passing the torch of good governance and experience to new generations. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, When we look around the world, we easily come to appreciate how fortunate we are, and what a privilege it is to be a citizen of The Bahamas. The members of our new Parliament surely recognize what a privilege it is to serve, in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, some of the most favored people, lands and seas to be found anywhere on God’ s earth. We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to our God, to focus first, foremost and forever, on restoring those values that our forefathers espoused at the founding of our nation 44 years ago. My government is convinced that our transgressions in governance, our levels of crime, our levels of unemployment, our unhealthy lifestyles, our levels of social injustice and our seeming worship of power over principles, will never abate until and unless we begin to restore those Bahamian values that we cherished and embraced not so long ago. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, We propose to enlist our religious communities to assist my government in reawakening and reestablishing those national values, as a persistent, ongoing and ever growing effort. And with an eye to the future, we fervently ask for the support of our religious community, in bringing an increasing number of our young people, and especially our young Bahamian men, back to becoming fully engaged members of our spiritual communities. We must intervene to save our youth, for this time is indeed, and especially, the younger peoples’ time. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My government is troubled by the perceived increase in talented young Bahamians, seeking their fortunes permanently beyond the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. No country can maximize its potential, if many of its talented young people enlist their talents permanently in the development of economies elsewhere. My Government will implement a national skills register of Bahamians overseas to assist with their participation in national development and to provide them with opportunities for engagement in regional and international organizations. My Government will work assiduously to reduce the high level of youth unemployment to secure the future of this nation. We will also seek to reduce total unemployment which will improve the standard of living and quality of life for all of the people of The Bahamas. We will address youth unemployment, in collaboration with stakeholders, through the implementation of specialized programmes that will equip our youth with essential job-related skills and provide employment opportunities. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will place before you, an ambitious agenda of reform and modernization. My Government will ensure that its Ministers are held to the highest standards of constitutional and personal conduct. Consequently, my Government will enact and enforce anti-corruption legislation for all Parliamentarians and Public Officers. My Government will, with the consent of the electorate in a referendum, constitute an Independent Electoral Commission and Boundaries Commission, introduce term limits for Prime Ministers and introduce a system of recall for non-performing Members of Parliament. The Office of Ombudsman will be created to provide a direct source of relief, where people have legitimate grievances due to the actions or inactions of government or any agency of the government. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, The Rule of Law is critical to the maintenance of the People’s trust in the exercise of public authority, so my government will enact legislation to establish the Office of an Independent Director of Public Prosecutions. In support of this endeavor certain functions now performed by the Attorney General, such as the power to issue a Fiat authorizing the commencement of legal actions in sensitive matters or a Nolle Prosequi, will be transferred to the Director of Public Prosecutions. To restore the People’s confidence in public administration, my Government will create a Bureau of Investigations to investigate matters referred by the Auditor General, the Ombudsman or the public. My Government will put forward legislation to establish and strengthen the independence of the Office of the Auditor General, allowing it to function properly and without government imposed constraints on its finances. My Government will amend the Public Disclosure Act to broaden the scope of application to include campaign finance reform and to make provision for direct referral to an independent prosecutor. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will modernize and increase the efficiency of the judicial system to give wider access to justice. We will improve the efficiency of the Judiciary by enacting a Court Services Act to remove the Office of the Judiciary from the Public Service, and we will require all new Magistrates and Judges to attend the newly created Justice Training Institute. To improve the efficiency of the magistrates’ courts, my Government will seek to introduce an audio-visual digital recording system to reduce the need for manual recording of evidence by Magistrates. This will ensure that Transcripts of Trials or Preliminary Inquiries are prepared and certified in a timely manner to reduce delays in cases. Additionally, to enhance efficiency, my government will amend the 82 years old Magistrates’ Rules of Court 1934 which govern proceedings so that Magistrate Court summonses will no longer have to be served by police officers only. This will release our police officers to actively fight crime. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government recognizes the value of tourism to the economy, while being keenly aware of the fierceness of the competition in the global and regional tourism marketplace. My Government will collaborate with all the major tourism industry stakeholders to enhance the tourism product onshore, to develop throughout our islands. My government’s primary goal in communications, sales and airlift strategies will be on ensuring a return on investment in all that we do. My Government will work aggressively towards expanding our digital footprint by using data driven metrics towards all efforts. My government will give greater priority to initiatives to enliven and bring excitement to downtown Nassau. My Government will execute plans for the continued refurbishment of Festival place. My Government will aggressively pursue additional airlift. My Government will strengthen the sales and marketing team in our network of Bahamas Tourist Offices across the United States, Canada and Europe. My Government will capitalize on the marketing power of social media by engaging freelance bloggers to generate content and publicity about the Family Islands. My Government will launch the rebound of the island of Grand Bahama in accordance with the template of a master strategic plan designed for Grand Bahama. Accordingly, my Government will establish a tourism signature identity in the marketplace for the Island of Grand Bahama. My Government will collaborate with strategic international partners to bring world class tournaments and competitions to Grand Bahama. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will stimulate the local business environment. My Government will strengthen the Fresh Start and Jump Start initiatives established during its last term in office. My Government will establish a One-stop-shop to improve the ease of doing business. My Government will grant tax inducements or incentives to Bahamians comparable to or in line with those given to foreign investors. My Government will review and give consideration to the ownership of taxi licence plates by persons who have been leasing those plates for many years. My Government will enact legislation to ensure that there are standards applied to import products that Bahamians consume as well as to products manufactured here. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government realizes that a healthy and strong Grand Bahamian economy is vital to the growth and development of the entire Bahamas. Consequently, my Government will establish an Investment Promotion Board to promote Grand Bahama as a place for doing business and recreation. My Government will repeal and replace the Grand Bahama (Port Area) Investment Incentives Act 2016 to ensure that all licencees receive equal treatment under the law. My Government will focus on the development of Freeport as an off shore technology hub. My Government will promote Grand Bahama as a primary location for the local and international film and television industries. My Government will create incentives to establish a financial services centre in Grand Bahama. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government is committed to the exploration and development of the untapped resources of the Family Islands. Consequently, my Government will promote diversification in tourism and banking and promote more Bahamian ownership of these industries. My Government will, where practicable, ensure the purchase of locally manufactured goods and services and other supplies. My Government will renew the Family Island Incentives Act to promote growth in agriculture and manufacturing and support diversification in growth of agricultural produce among Family Islands and encourage and enhance inter island trade. My Government will provide for a portion of the revenue collected by the District Councils to be used to address local needs. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will establish a committee to look into the implementation of local government in New Providence. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government firmly believes that to live and work in a safe, secure, and prosperous community is the inalienable right of all citizens in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Our steadfast resolve is to target the root causes of crime and implement modern crime fighting strategies. My Government is committed to collaborating and working with community partners: parents, educators, church leaders, youth leaders, social workers, and all relevant agencies of the government. Through neighbourhood safety programs and community-based partners the culture of violence in our communities will change. My Government continues to be committed to zero tolerance for crime, inclusive of minor infractions. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, Our most urgent priorities in crime fighting are initiatives that focus on prevention, deterrence, and enforcement. My Government will enact legislation to establish the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). My Government will enact legislation to address the conditional release of offenders into society through a Parole and Probation of Offenders system. My Government will enact legislation to establish a Guns and Gang Unit that will focus on dismantling gangs and disrupting the trafficking in illicit firearms. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will continue to close the gap between science and criminal justice and the quality of admissible DNA evidence. Recognizing the influence of the Internet in all aspects of our lives, and the use and misuse of social media, my Government will place emphasis on the detection of financial, commercial, and cyber-crimes. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government recognizes that the education and training of Bahamians are key factors in the progressive and sustainable economic development of our nation. We must, with purpose and urgency, address the present national skills deficit, improve sub-standard literacy, numeracy and communication levels in our nation and promote greater inclusiveness in the education of society. My Government will mandate pre-school learning for all two and a half year olds. We will ensure the availability of adequately staffed and equipped pre- school facilities in all Family Islands where practicable. My Government will enhance the provision of Specialty Education to ensure equity in education and employability of students with special needs. My Government will establish a National Apprenticeship Scheme, in consultation with relevant stakeholders. My Government will expand technical and vocational education. My Government will implement a pilot programme for single gender classes at the Junior High School Level to assist with closing the achievement gap between boys and girls. My Government is committed to substantially reforming the Education Act that will allow for the establishment of a National Education Commission. A long term goal is the end of social promotion in the school system. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will provide easy and affordable health care throughout The Bahamas. My Government reaffirms that the fundamental premise of National Health Insurance is that eligible residents have equitable access to quality healthcare. My Government supports National Health Insurance but recognizes that the present roll-out model, which focuses on primary care services, does not address the significant health maladies our country presently faces. My Government will therefore extend the focus of NHI to secondary and tertiary health care. My Government will oversee the incremental implementation of a progressive and functional National Catastrophic Health Insurance Programme. My Government will construct, upgrade and expand state-of-the-art facilities and services throughout New Providence and the Family Islands, inclusive of a mini hospital on the island of Eleuthera. My Government will enhance the conditions of service for all health care staff. My Government will ensure an adequate supply of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to all medical facilities and clinics in The Bahamas. Ever cognizant of the pervasiveness of the Internet, my Government will complete the full implementation of an electronic medical records system, digitize all paper records, and encourage the expansion of telemedicine throughout The Bahamas. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, A clean environment results in a healthy nation. It is our duty to enable a clean environment for daily living and to develop and protect our surroundings for future generations. My Government will enact legislation to establish a Ministry of the Environment to coordinate all national and international environmental obligations and activities. My Government will set up a mechanism to respond to environmental incidents and emergencies, and to introduce liability for persons or institutions polluting our environment. My Government will focus on the remediation of the New Providence landfill to minimize fires. Madam President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government is committed to building a society in which those with the greatest need are granted the greatest assistance and therefore we will work to expand our social services throughout the length and breadth of the Family of Islands. My Government will take action to effect a reduction of VAT on breadbasket items. My Government will continue to provide assistance to those adversely impacted by Hurricane Matthew. Special focus will be given to the construction of new homes for those persons who meet the requirements. My Government will bring the Child Protection Act 2007 into full force, by establishing Regulations to govern the Children’s Registry and for the creation of the office of Minors Advocate. My Government will appoint Disability Inspectors to assist with the monitoring and enforcing of the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, particularly as Provision 21 of the Act will come into full effect on 31st December, 2017. My Government will enact legislation to make the misuse of accessible parking an offense with penalties. My Government will implement a Gender-Based Violence National Strategic Plan. My Government will launch a programme of Real Property Tax discounts and rebates for pensioners 65 or over who qualify. Mr. President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, All Bahamians are entitled to an acceptable standard of living, ready access to essential services and liveable physical environs. My Government is deeply aware of poverty, especially in the Inner City of Nassau, and is determined to eradicate the “in your face” physical conditions that demean the dignity of our people. For decades resident in the Over-The Hill areas have not received the kind of attention required to transform their business, residential and overall environs. Accordingly, my Government will institute Urban Development by revitalizing inner city communities (Urban Renewal) and expanding the reach of social services. My Government will enact legislation to provide for a “rent-to-own” programme to facilitate home ownership. We will continue the development of new Government housing subdivisions to address unmet demands for truly affordable housing. My Government will continue the regularization of long term unauthorized occupation of Crown Lands for individuals and families. We will also make available, Crown Land to qualified Bahamians at concessionary rates. My Government will review legislation to ensure that adequate provisions exists for the protection of homeowners with respect to foreclosures and mortgage protection. My Government will encourage and empower absentee landlords to redevelop their ancestral lands and abandoned buildings. My Government will create tax free economic zones in these areas to encourage business growth and spur job creation in the redevelopment phase and beyond. These zones will operate in a safe and clean environment with each zone addressing the socio economic situation of the area, through tripartite arrangements with landlords, government and Bahamian investors. My Government will enact legislation which allows duty free concessions on all construction materials and building supplies used in the construction of business premises and new or/or refurbished owner occupied homes in these zones. Mr. President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, All government services are performed by Bahamians who work in the Public Sector of The Bahamas for the people of The Bahamas. We recognize that outdated policies, inattention to the development of human resources, the acceptance of mediocrity in the performance of duties have led to the inefficient delivery of public sector services. These agencies exist to provide service, and the public should not be frustrated by inattentive and/or inefficient workers. Accordingly, my Government will move expeditiously to provide the appropriate training for all levels of the Public Service. Madame President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, I have set out an ambitious programme of activities for the next five (5) years and these programmes will be guided by the resources available. Madame President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, My Government will strengthen the accountability and transparency of the fiscal operations of government in the Ministry of Finance. My Government will introduce Public Procurement Regulations under the Financial Administration and Audit Act. In this regard, the Ministry’s immediate focus is on improving its systems for public finance management through the procurement of new software applications for the operations of the Customs and the Treasury Departments. My Government will be introducing legislation to allow the government to meet its international obligations with respect to financial regulation and supervision. This would also include legislation to facilitate the exchange of information for tax purposes in a manner that has the full support of the private sector. These measures seek to secure The Bahamas’ position as a premier financial services centre. My Government will advance legislative initiatives to benefit the domestic financial sector. Legislation will establish a credit bureau and strengthen the oversight of domestic and international financial institutions. My Government will commence the strengthening of the Department of Statistics, giving that department the autonomy and resources to improve the timeliness and reliability of statistics which are critical for decision making. My Government will also introduce Legislation to strengthen financial regulations in The Bahamas. Madame President and Honourable Senators, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly, The national development of The Bahamas is the collective responsibility of all its citizens through the strategic and purposeful work of the Government. Our aspirations will be greatly enhanced by the ties we forge with our partners in regional and international communities. My Government will maintain the level of The Bahamas’ participation in regional, hemispheric and international organizations such as CARICOM, the Organization of American States, (OAS), the United Nations (UN) and the Commonwealth of Nations. Now available in both traditional and electric forms, the 208 gains more versatility alongside a fresh new look that has us hoping for the 208 as part of Peugeot’s plans to reenter the US market. No word on that for the time being, but in the interim, let’s see what makes this little guy so intriguing. The hatchback has a nice curve to it, while a distinct lack of sharp, straight creases adds to the hatch’s cute factor. Up front, there’s a modestly sized (for 2019) grille, hanging out between large headlights with a long running light that practically scrapes the ground at its bottom terminus. The shapely silhouette doesn’t appear to mess up rearward visibility all that much, which is nice.Inside, Peugeot makes use of interesting layering on the dashboard, with the gauge cluster and infotainment screens mounted nice and high. There’s a sort of white-space gap between that and the lower dashboard, which has centrally mounted switchgear, two USB ports and a load of storage space. The shifter packs a wild design that looks like an accessory for a game of Duck Hunt. It’s on the modest side, but it still looks futuristic.Enlarge ImageSmall hatchbacks offer versatility over sedans without requiring the owner to go out and buy a crossover. Peugeot The Peugeot e-208 packs an entirely electric powertrain. Its 50-kWh battery is integrated into the floorpan, which maintains cargo space and provides for a sportier center of gravity. The electric motor isn’t the most powerful at about 134 horsepower, but that thrift allows for a decent driving range of 211 miles (by Euro-spec WLTP standards). It’ll take more than 20 hours to charge the e-208 using a conventional wall outlet, but a dedicated home charger drops that time to about 8 hours. The cabin can be preconditioned using Peugeot’s smartphone app, which also handles remote charging duties. The standard Peugeot 208 has four engines on offer. There are three 1.2-liter inline-3 gas engines available, and one 1.5-liter inline-4 diesel. Transmissions vary depending on the engine, but both manual (five-speed or six-speed) and automatics (eight-speed) are available. It can be loaded with just about every safety system under the sun, including adaptive cruise control, active park assist, autobrake, lane-keep assist and traffic sign recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available through the car’s touchscreen, available in both 7-inch and 10-inch variants. The new Peugeot 208 goes on sale in Europe in late summer. However, eager buyers can shell out for a reservation as early as the end of March. Pricing will likely be announced closer to its on-sale date. Kolkata: The youth at Karaya was shot dead after an altercation broke out with one of his relatives on Saturday evening. Locals claimed that a person, identified as Sakil, was stabbed by the deceased, Shaikh Mayna, alias Minaz. After this, Naushad came to the picture and shot dead Mayna for stabbing Sakil who happens to be the former’s uncle. After the preliminary investigation, the sleuths suspect there was enmity between Mayna and Naushad. Locals claimed that Naushad’s father used to sell alcohol illegally and Mayna had protested against it. Recently, Naushad became a part of illegal promoting activity that became rampant in the area. Mayna had also protested against it. For this, Mayna had automatically become Naushad’s target for interrupting and interfering in his anti-social activities. It was also alleged that Sakil and Naushad passed lewd comments at Mayna’s wife on Saturday. As a result, they got involved in an altercation beside the rail line. Police have not been able to trace Naushad yet. The sleuths are searching the possible hide-outs to nab him at the earliest. Several persons have been detained and are being questioned in this regard. read more
About four years ago, 15-year-old Anyabai won Rs 54,000 when she led her school team to victory in a state-level football match. The prize money was more than what her mother earned in an entire year. Hailing from Alakhpura, a village some 30 km from the district headquarters of Bhiwani in Haryana, Anyabai is a Dalit by caste and desperately poor by means. Her father died of a heart attack when she was just two and the burden of earning for the four-member family passed on to her mother, Maya Devi, whose life story provides a window into the struggles of people at the lowest rungs of society. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfScheduled Caste communities like hers, comprising about 16.6 per cent of country’s population, are generally an oppressed lot, particularly in impoverished rural areas where they are discriminated against by higher castes and are condemned to menial cleaning jobs that no one else will do. There are also those who have defied the system and become achievers in their own right. One of them is the fatherless girl Anyabai, who could have been a victim of the oppressive systems of caste and patriarchy, but her skills as a footballer helped her challenge both. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveJust a few years after she started playing, she has already represented India twice at the international level.”She gets around Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 for playing every national match. Last year, she won around Rs 2.5 lakh by playing a few matches,” Sonika Bijarnia, her school coach said. “She manages to play two-three matches every year.”So football is not only helping her find a purpose in life and represent her country at the highest levels, but is also helping her bring her family out of the vicious cycle of poverty. Anyabai played in the U-15 South Asian Football Federation in 2017, in which India lost to Bangladesh in the finals. She recollects the final with a bit of disappointment, saying: “We lost 1-0.”Anyabai, who has a sister and a brother, is her mother’s pride. “Nobody in the entire family has achieved so much,” Maya Devi said. “I didn’t have any hopes (while) Anyabai kept playing,” she said.In 2016, she played in the Indian U-14 women’s football team at the AFC Regional (South and Central) Girls Championship in Tajikistan.”When I go out of my village, my country, there is fear about going to an unknown land. It is a very different feeling. It’s also nice that I get to make friends from other parts of the country and the world,” Anyabai said.”I used to struggle with English earlier. I try speaking the language now. There is less hesitation.”More than a decade back, when Anyabai was small and hadn’t started playing, it was really tough for Maya Devi to manage the family with just the Rs 150 a day that she got as a daily-wage worker. “This income depended on the farming season and yes, I struggled… used to borrow money and somehow managed,” she said.”I made many efforts to bring my kids up all by myself. If Anyabai achieves something in life, I will consider my life to be successful. I have worked very hard,” she said. Two years back, she was given the job of a “safai karamchari” (sanitation worker). Among the five cleaners in the village, she is the only woman. Despite some improvements, the life of struggle continues for Maya Devi and her family. She has modest dreams for her daughter. But Anyabai’s dreams are bigger. “I wish to grow up and play like (Argentine footballer Lionel) Messi,” she said passionately. The girl has plans of taking up social sciences as her subject in class 11 along with language and vocational subjects. “I will study further after class 12, but then I wish to just play and study football after that.”Anyabai recounts the village’s journey which goes back nearly a decade. The then school coach was busy training boys for kabaddi when girls began pestering him, and he was forced to indulge them by giving them a football to play with. She developed a fascination for the game. After that, there was no looking back. read more

A relatively new sport aimed at the over 50s is already gaining momentum in Paphos following the recent creation of a ‘walking football’ group.“Twenty-four players aged from 50 to those approaching 80 have already registered with us and we are hoping to attract even more,” Ian Charlesworth (Charlie) told the Sunday Mail.Launched just six weeks ago, ‘Paphos United Walking Football’ is attracting Paphos residents who hail from all over the globe, said Charlie who is group secretary.Walking football is predominantly aimed at the over 50s, although those in their 40s will be accepted in Paphos. The game involves playing football without running, sprinting or jogging. It’s a non-contact sport and the ball should not travel above head height.Currently matches are played with five or six a side and sessions are for men and women. Some of the team with Charlie front row fourth from rightCharlie said that although a certain amount of skill is involved, players possess varying degrees of ability, and the aim of the initiative is for participants to enjoy the experience, which comes with the benefits of physical exercise, activity and social interaction.“These are the three F’s under which we operate: fun, friendship and fitness,” he said.Walking football was devised in 2011, by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust in the UK, as part of the ‘Extra Time Initiative’ aimed at people aged 50 years and over. Its aim is to keep people involved with football who may have mobility issues or for other reasons are not able to play a traditional game.‘The Football Project’, a Nicosia-based organisation is looking to help walking football progress in Cyprus and cooperate with the Cyprus Football Federation to help promote the sport to create an association and national leagues in the future.Walking football is a current UK ‘craze’ after coverage of a session featured on Sky Sports News and a documentary broadcast on Sky Sports Football.Several other clubs have adopted the game and support is growing daily, with over 1,200 registered teams in UK.“Although walking football is based on association football, the main difference is that, if a player runs, then they concede a free kick to the other side.”This means players learning a whole new approachThere is also a ban on slide tackles, part of a set of rules to ‘level the playing field’ for those who may have a physical disadvantage.“We do have a couple of ex-professionals playing,” said Charlie, including one from Denmark, who’s in his 70s and very fit.Walking football promotes cardiovascular fitness and produces little stress on the body. The beauty of the game is that it is suitable for everyone, and currently one of the players, a 77-year-old man, is able to play despite having a double knee replacement, he said.Next week, the UK’s Graham Collier, a current England Walking Football Over 60s International, who played professional football for Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe United, will be joining the group to undertake some coaching and offer helpful tips.In June, the ‘England Walking Football Over 60s’ manager, Stuart Langworthy, will also attend a couple of sessions.“He thinks it will become huge here and he’s got experience of setting up a team in UK. They started their team with only four players and just four years later, they have 60 players in their squads. They are now one of the best teams in England,” said Charlie. The ‘Paphos United Walking Football’ sessions take place every Tuesday morning at 9.45am at the ‘AM Fair Game’ sports centre Tremithousa, and also at the Tala community council football ground.‘Paphos United Walking Football’ has a Facebook page which is kept up to date. directions On May 11 President Trump announced the creation of an election-integrity commission Nominally it was supposed to “study vulnerabilities in voting systems” but it got off to a rocky start requesting vast amounts of personal information on voters from every state That led Vanita Gupta head of the civil rights division in the Obama Justice Department to allege that the true goal of the Trump panel is to “lay the groundwork for voter suppression” by making it more difficult for typically pro-Democrat minorities to vote In fact Trump’s commission asks only for voter information that states can legally provide But it is arousing the same kind of partisan suspicions that Obama’s efforts to work with the states did last fall In Arizona secretary of state Reagan says she has declined
